The Port Fairy Golf Club:

I'll be honest from the start, I spent my late teens playing the port fairy golf course, I would get on my bike, throw my clubs over my shoulder, ride down to the course and play every chance I could, I love the course, it holds a special place in my heart.

So, for our 50th course review we thought it would be a good idea to head back to Port Fairy, we hadn't played there in years and couldn't wait to see what changes they had made, walking onto the first tee it was apparent this is a changed course.

Almost all the trees from the course have been removed transforming the course into a true links course, the first tee used to have a tree in at the first bend that would somehow always catch my ball, this is gone now leaving an open chance to bomb your tee shot around the corner giving you a chance at hitting the par 5 in two.

It won't take you long on this course to notice how immaculate the whole thing is, being so close to the ocean the fairways always receive plenty of rain, but with the sand base the course drainage is second to none, the greens are also picture perfect, they're not hugely undulating but they can be deadly quick at certain times of the year.

One thing this region is known for is wind and I can tell you from personal experience that when the wind blows at Port Fairy it becomes one of the hardest golf courses you will ever play.

Like the Par 3 8th hole, a pitching wedge most days, down hill to a two tiered green, but into the wind I've played a 2 iron there and still come up short, or par 5 18th, where I've hit driver off the tee, followed up by two more drivers to reach the green, but then when the wind changes direction I've hit driver, then 6 iron to be on for two.

There are so many memorable holes in this course, the short par 3 8th I mentioned earlier, the par 5 12th hole that runs along the coast line with epic views of the ocean but my favourite hole has the be the challenging par 4 14th hole, at 408 meters long its length will test you, but with the tee up high overlooking the ocean, and a huge drop off down the green it's a hole you wont soon forget.

Conclusion

We've played nearly 100 courses in our time at Tredam Golf and few courses come close to the Port Fairy Golf Course, it's an exceptional experience all year round, it's got a little something for everyone, high handicappers all the way up to professionals love this course and while your there you get the bonus of staying in the beautiful seaside town of Port Fairy.
