This weeks course on our mission to review every golf course in Australia is:
The Mount Macedon Golf Course has been around in one shape or another since the 1920's and has a tumultuous history, originally part of a guest house the course was left to disrepair until the mid-50's when a group formed to rebuild the course.
Ash Wednesday Struck in the 1980's to again challenge the locals resolve but the club has been rebuilt yet again and today stands as a spectacular 9-hole course at the base of Mount Macedon
Situated only an hour and a half from Melbourne the town is a wonderful weekend retreat, and with the golf course being $25 for unlimited play or $20 for 9 hole it is spectacular value.
Hole 1:
We start off the course with a relatively short par 3, but don't let the distance fool you because you must make good contact, or you could find yourself in the flowing creek below.
After your pleasant walk across the large bridge, you hopefully find yourself putting for birdie on the small but reasonably tame green.
Hole 2:
At 242 Metres the par 4 second hole is extremely tempting to try and bomb off the tee for one, but do not do what I did and end up fading it into the trees, otherwise you are left with a difficult second shot at the green, a well-placed hybrid might be in order to leave yourself with a short second shot at the again small green.
Hole 3:
Long par 3's challenge most golfers and at 190 meters this hole will challenge any player, there are no bunkers guarding the green, which is a relief, anything pin high will give you a good chance at making par
Hole 4:
One of the more spectacular holes on the course, from the tee this par 4 doesn't seem too long at 350 meters, but its uphill almost all the way, don't let the stunning views on Mount Macedon distract you because the green is very difficult to find with your second shot and anything long will be punished with a lost ball.
Hole 5:
Not a long by par 4 by any stretch but this hole will definitely challenge you, with a dogleg to the left and trees overhanging the tee shot is imperative, go to long and you'll end up against the fence with no second shot, go too far left and you'll end up in the trees, hybrid probably the smart play even though I went to driver here, after that it's a downhill second shot into the green to a relatively flat green
Hole 6:
This 316-meter par 4 has one of the more generous fairways, there are trees left and right but if you're a slicer of the ball then you may be safe on the next fairway across, if you hit a hybrid off the tee, you'll leave yourself with a full wedge into the green
Hole 7:
Like a lot of this course, fade is the play, get a good drive away here and you give yourself a short shot into the green for your second shot, but be careful because if you get too close to the green you can have an awkward length shot at the green like I did where I went long over the back
Hole 8:
A daunting hole off the tee, a long par 3 downhill, in the summertime you want to land the ball short because the ball will carry into the trees behind, in the winter the ground can get a bit muddy, and it might just save you
Hole 9:
Probably the best hole on the course this hole is not long but it doglegs to the right at the end and a creek runs across the fairway towards the green, get your drive as far down as possible, avoiding the trees on the left and right giving yourself a long fading hybrid into the green for two, Don't make the mistake I did hitting the ball down near the Creek, I was lucky to be able to pitch up and get in for par but this hole will definitely put pressure on your short game
Conclusion
There is a reason why the mount Macedon golf course is ranked as one of the best 9-hole courses in Victoria, with some spectacular view's fantastic fairways most of the round and challenging greens this course is worth a visit and at $25 for unlimited holes and $20 for nine you cannot ask for much more than that
